8 Day Highlights of Cape Town & Garden Route

Trip Highlights

This tour explores the highlights of the Cape with visits to Cape Point, Boulders Beach, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, historical sites in the city such as the Company Gardens, the Castle of Good Hope, the SA Museum and Table Mountain. No visit to the Cape is complete without visiting Stellenbosch and some wine farms. From here we discover the scenic beauty of the Garden Route, visiting Cape Agulhas (the southernmost point of Africa), Knysna, Tsitsikamma National Park and Addo Elephant National Park.

Duration: 8 days, 7 nights
Meals: 7 x breakfasts & 4 dinners included
Accommodation: 3 Nights at a 4 star hotel in Cape Town and 4 nights in good 3 star en-suite chalets along the Garden Route
Group size: A minimum of 2 passengers are required for this tour to depart. Standard tours can have up to 10 guests per tour, with potentially bigger coaches for Cape Town excursions may be used. Tours for bigger groups are available on request
Children: Children of all ages are welcome, although children under the age of 6 years are not allowed on the SAN Parks open game drive vehicles in Addo Elephant Park.
Vehicles: Climate controlled micro-buses.


  • All accommodation is subject to change pending availability.
  • This tour requires a minimum of 2 passengers to depart.
  • It is important to note that this is not a private safari and more than likely there will be other guests joining you on the safari.
  • Please note that sunset game drive times are subject to change and availability on the day. These drives are conducted by SAN PARKS, by one of their rangers and in one of their vehicles. There will most likely be other guests on this drive. Children under 6 years of age are not allowed on SAN Parks open game drive vehicles.
  • Guests flying out of Port Elizabeth Airport on the last day are reminded to not book any flights departing earlier than 13h00 (domestic) in order to give us enough time to get you to the airport. We recommend that you rather stay over in Port Elizabeth if possible. Since we cannot guarantee our arrival time in Port Elizabeth on the last day we will not be held responsible for re-imbursements of flight tickets, should we arrive later than expected.
  • Extensions to other destinations such as the Kruger National Park, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana are also available on request.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

On arrival at the Cape Town airport you will be met by one of our representatives who will take you to The Peninsula Suite Hotel, which is ideally situated in Sea Point across the road from the beach. The hotel offers complimentary shuttles within an 8 km radius, thus including the City Bowl, V & A waterfront and Table Mountain. The Waterfront is almost a destination on its own and offers loads of entertainment, different restaurants and shopping. Robben Island tours as well as boat cruises also depart from there.

Day 2: Cape Town City & Wine Route

Today we explore Cape Town City and the Wine region!

The Mother City is steeped in history, culture and scenic wonders, and offers an abundance of things to see and do. A half day tour gives you an introduction to experience the city and its attractions.

To get a taste of the thriving centre of the Mother City, in the shelter of Table Mountain, a Cape Town city tour is not to be missed. Here you will find a number of the Cape’s top attractions, from the imposing Castle of Good Hope to the colourful cottages of the Bo Kaap, the bustling Green Market Square, the South African Museum, the beautiful Company Gardens and plenty more to see. With an experienced and knowledgeable guide, and from the comfort of an airconditioned vehicle, you will be able to learn more about the Cape Town

CBD and its surrounds, in a city tour that is sure to leave you with plenty of memories and photographs of this part of the Cape.

  • Ticket for the cable way to Table Mountain is not included as this activity is weather dependent. If the weather is not good for the mountain we will drive to Tableview for a “postcard view” of Table Mountain.


From here we take a delightful drive winding its way to the heart of the Cape Winelands, through superb vineyards and past Cape Dutch homesteads to the heart of South Africa’s wine industry, Stellenbosch, boasting great beauty and culture that is steeped in South African history. Walk down the canal lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings.

With the sheer vastness of wine estates on offer, we are truly spoilt for choice when we enjoy our first wine tasting of the day at the Zevenwacht Wine Estate.

Let yourself be guided around the stunning wine cellars of this old established estate, feeling the passion of the winemakers and understanding the process that goes behind turning a grapevine field into a sumptuous wine. Treat yourself to a tasting of the estate’s finest wines and cheeses. We enjoy a wine tasting before taking time to enjoy the historical building of Stellenbosch. The town of Stellenbosch is a small but very vibrant town with a very famous university and numerous activities such a wine cellar tours and tastings. You will have the opportunity to purchase wines to bring back home to enjoy the region’s wonderful vintages after your visit.

Our last stop for the day is at the Marianne Wine Estate. Marianne Wine Estate is situated at the foothill of the Simonsberg outside the town of Stellenbosch. Be welcomed for a unique wine experience in a superb environment. Taste the wine and discover their French savoirfaire.

We return to the bustle of city life after an enthralling day in the countryside.

Day 3: Cape Peninsula

Today we explore the Cape Peninsula on a full day tour from 08h00 to 17h00.

Travel along the spectacular coastline of the Peninsula through charming historical villages. Visit the mythical meeting place of two great oceans and experience the “fairest Cape of all”

Our journey to Cape Point takes us along the scenic Atlantic seaboard coastal road. We pass the pristine beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay with their soft white sand and assure blue water. The formidable 12 Apostles Peaks rise above the road on one side, while sheer cliffs and incredible rock formations drop into the icy Atlantic Ocean on the other side. There is no doubt the coast of the Cape peninsula offers magnificent scenery with its great biodiversity.

We arrive at the quaint fishing village of Hout Bay with its imposing Sentinel. Visit Duiker Island (Seal Island) (own account) or shop for souvenirs at the craft market at the harbour.

Our tour continues over Chapman’s Peak which offers amazing photo opportunities, and onto the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. This area is home to magnificent ‘fynbos’, many different species of buck and birds, the Cape Mountain Zebra, and mischievous baboons. These creatures entertain guests enjoying lunch at the restaurant which has splendid views of False Bay. Take the funicular (own account) to the lighthouse to see the meeting of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans at the Cape Point.

We visit Boulders Beach to see the Jackass penguins (own account) before arriving at the naval base of Simonstown, and then we venture inland to our last stop of the day at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. With the sun setting over the tall peaks of Table Mountain the last rays sparkle on the trees and flowers, and offer a fitting end to a day filled with all the Cape has to offer.

  • The Constantia winelands can be visited in place of Kirstenbosch

Day 4: Cape Town – Agulhas

We depart from Cape Town between 06h30 – 07h30. Today’s route takes us along the Coastal Whale route, through one of the most scenic parts of our country. We stop en-route in the town of Hermanus to have lunch (own expense) and in the hope of spotting the Southern Right whales (seasonal) that visit this coast to breed.

After lunch we head to the exact point where the African continent sinks into the ocean and keep a sharp eye out for the Cape Grysbok in the fynbos or Cape fur seals and Dolphins playing in the surf. We reach our overnight destination in time to appreciate one of the most spectacular sunsets in the world from the patios of our fisherman’s cottages, in sight of the ocean.

Dinner is a two course meal, prepared by your guide and served al fresco outside one of the cottages. Wine is served with dinner but guests are welcome to bring along additional / alternative drinks which should be purchased before entering the park.

Day 5: Agulhas – Tsitsikamma

Today our route takes us through the scenic fruit and wheat producing regions of the Overberg and Langeberg. These rolling grasslands are known to be home to the endangered Blue Crane and we may be fortunate enough to spot some of these beautiful birds. We travel along the world renowned Garden Route, past the picturesque coastal towns nestled in the lake and lagoon region at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. We stop in the renowned town of Knysna where enjoy an own expense lunch and join a cruise in the scenic Knysna Lagoon. From here we depart to Tsitsikamma, the jewel of the Southern Cape in time for lunch (own expense).

After checking into our accommodation, there is time to explore the beauty of the rare indigenous forest and impressive coastline on a hike to a waterfall. If we are lucky we might spot the Cape clawless otter hunting in the streams and surf.

Dinner is a two course meal, prepared by your guide and served al fresco outside one of the cabins. Wine is served with dinner but guests are welcome to bring along additional / alternative drinks which can be purchased at the shop.

Day 6: Tsitsikamma – Addo

We rise early for a morning hike in search of the beautiful but elusive Knysna Turaco and depart after breakfast to the world renowned Addo Elephant Park. The drive takes us from forest and plantation through the semi-arid region of the Southern Cape with several opportunities to see some of the rare Raptor species that make this area their home.

We arrive at Addo Elephant Park and start exploring the park in our closed tour vehicle. After a short drive, we have lunch (own expense) at the main rest camp and check into our accommodation. This afternoon you head out on an afternoon game drive, conducted by a SANParks ranger, in an open game drive vehicle. This drive generally takes about 3 hours and tends to extend into the early evening, affording guests the possibility of spotting some nocturnal animals.

Dinner is a two course meal, prepared by your guide and served al fresco outside one of the chalets. Wine is served with dinner but guests are welcome to bring along additional / alternative drinks which can be purchased at the shop.

Day 7: Addo

Today we will spend the morning & afternoon exploring the park in our tour vehicle, in search of some great photo opportunities & experiencing wildlife at its best! Addo Elephant Park offers a unique eco system and is home to a huge variety of wildlife, including the Big 5 as well as plains game, Black Backed Jackal, Tortoises and Dung Beetles (who have right of way!).

We’ll return to camp for breakfast after the morning drive and have time for a siesta & lunch (own expense) before heading off on our afternoon drive.

Dinner is a two course meal, prepared by your guide and served al fresco outside one of the chalets. Wine is served with dinner but guests are welcome to bring along additional / alternative drinks which can be purchased at the shop.

Day 8: Addo – Port Elizabeth

After an early wake-up call (the time varies according to the seasons and park gate opening times) we have tea or coffee & rusks (dried biscuits to be dunked in your coffee or tea). Our final morning safari will take approximately 3-4 hours.

We return to camp for breakfast after which we sadly have to leave the park & head to Port Elizabeth airport where the tour ends around mid-day.
